The administration of President Donald Trump is set to closely observe Nigeria’s upcoming 2027 general elections, according to US Congressman Riley Moore. Moore, a Republican from West Virginia, commented on the matter during an interview with NoireTV, stating that the conduct of these elections will be an issue of significant interest for Washington.
When asked if the United States could enhance its support for credible elections in Nigeria, Moore indicated that the administration will closely monitor the election results and their execution. He emphasized that he and others in the administration are committed to this oversight.
Moore also mentioned that the US House of Representatives is evaluating an appropriations bill that includes provisions concerning Nigeria, specifically focusing on religious freedom and US security assistance. He highlighted that he is a co-sponsor of legislation introduced by Congressman Chris Smith and underscored the importance of the upcoming appropriations bill.
He noted that this proposed legislation contains strong language regarding Nigeria’s relationship with the United States, specifically addressing issues such as the persecution of Christians and conditions on security assistance to the Nigerian government. Moore expressed optimism about the bill’s likelihood of becoming law and its implications for future relations with Nigeria.
Additionally, he stated that he would maintain communication with the Trump administration about Nigeria-related issues, revealing plans to meet with the president. Moore is also a co-sponsor of the Nigeria Religious Freedom and Accountability Act of 2026, which seeks to mandate periodic reports to Congress from the U.S. Secretary of State regarding religious persecution and mass atrocities in Nigeria.
The Smith-Moore bill proposes evaluations of Nigeria’s adherence to international religious freedom obligations, US security assistance, sanctions, humanitarian support, and measures by the Nigerian government to protect vulnerable communities and hold perpetrators accountable. Reports indicate that the US House Appropriations Committee passed provisions in April 2026 that implement stricter oversight and conditions on financial assistance to Nigeria, stipulating that a portion of these funds will be withheld until the Nigerian government is certified to be taking effective measures to reduce religious violence.
